This vibrant Denver neighborhood offers abundant charm, history, and things to do. Situated between Capitol Hill and Congress Park, the Cheesman Park boundaries are Colfax Avenue to the north, York Street to the east, 8th Avenue to the south, and Downing Street to the west. As one of Denver’s oldest neighborhoods, there is a lot of history here. The neighborhood was annexed for development in 1883, with the park being completed in 1915.
Cheesman Park is recognizable by its centerpiece, the Cheesman Memorial, a neoclassical marble Greek-style structure with columns which is a popular photo and event spot. The 80-acre park is a local favorite for outdoor activity and offers spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. There is a biking and walking path that circles the park, picnic area, and playground. This highly sought after neighborhood has one of the city’s densest populations with almost 9,000 residents.
In the early 1900s, the pavilion was used as a community gathering place hosting Broadway musicals and other open-air performances in the spring and summer months. It is also home to the Denver Botanic Gardens, and homes in the area used to be some of the city’s largest mansions. In the 1930s, several apartment buildings were built, creating a diverse neighborhood. It has become a favorite amongst the Denver LGBTQ+ community and serves as the starting point for the annual PrideFest parade in June.
Some of Denver’s more exciting food and beverage options are nearby including VooDoo Doughnut, Ice Cream Riot, and Liks Ice Cream, which has been serving the area for over 40 years. Satchel’s on 6th is locally owned, offering eclectic New American cuisine, while Barolo Grill offers authentic northern Italian food. Cherry Creek North is close by for even more dining options as well as some of the city’s best shopping and nightlife.
The area is surrounded by single-family homes of varying architectural styles including Spanish Revival, Greek Revival, and Victorian mansions. High-rise luxury condominiums, small bungalows, ranch-style homes, and apartment conversions mean there is a housing style perfect for anyone.
