Following a tour of the modern masterpiece at 119 Boulder Circle in Breckenridge, we enjoyed a conversation with Doug Gurlea, Managing Partner of New West Partners and Twyla Gurlea, Owner and Principal Designer at ColorView Design, who brought their talents together in creating this home.
They shared details on this exquisite mountain retreat represented by Aniela Wasmanski and Maggi Costello of LIV SIR International Realty explained what truly sets it apart as a destination of its own within a world-class ski resort.

LIV: Doug and Twyla, this home truly has every space a buyer could want: indoor/outdoor living, spacious kitchen, a wine room, and even a sauna. Please speak to some of your favorite aspects of the home.
Doug: For me, some favorites are the 3,400 square feet of snow-melted outdoor living space, coupled with where we are sitting in the great room and the ability for these two door systems to bring the outside in to combine the spaces.

The outdoor kitchen and outdoor dining and seating are wonderful; I don’t think there is another home like this in Breckenridge. There are upper, mid-level, and lower outdoor spaces on the north side
with a pop-up TV on the middle level outdoor patio for watching movies or the game.

Another favorite would be the kitchen. It’s a chef’s dream. With your family, you spend most of your time in the kitchen so this space is so important.
Twyla: I agree; this home checks every box and then some. What really stands out to me is the way the indoor/outdoor living experience is so seamless. The transition isn’t just architectural; it’s emotional. You step outside and still feel inside the design narrative — it’s incredibly fluid and intentional.
The kitchen strikes the perfect balance—elegant, but totally livable. It carries through the same tones and finishes used throughout the home, so it doesn’t feel like a separate space—it’s part of a larger, cohesive vision.

That same attention to detail continues in the wine room—we used backlit Italian gem glass from Sicis, so it doubles as storage and a statement. Finally, the sauna and spa carry that same level of design detail—quiet, calming, and seamlessly integrated into the rest of the home. A lot of thought went into the finishes — soft textures, calming palettes, refined lighting.

LIV: Please share some details about the materials used in this home.
Doug: The Town of Breckenridge has sustainability codes. 119 Boulder Circle is a very well-built, tight, well-insulated, efficient home. From the building science standpoint, it has very low HERS rating, so it’s extremely energy efficient
Twyla: We used white oak, dry stacked stone, and some black steel for an overall aesthetic that is very grounding and complements the ruggedness of Colorado with sophistication.

LIV: The finishes in this home really stand out. What was your inspiration in creating this luxe modern interior in a mountain town?
Twyla: For me, it always starts with balance. In Breckenridge, you’re surrounded by this raw, rugged beauty — the mountains are bold and grounding. I wanted the interior to reflect that strength but also soften it with refinement and comfort.

The goal was to create a space that feels timeless — something elevated, serene, and grounded in classic design principles so it remains relevant for years to come. We worked with calming,
nature-inspired palettes and layered in organic textures to keep the connection to the outdoors. The result is a space that invites you to unwind, reflect, and really live in it — it feels luxurious, but not loud.

Doug: We were inspired to do something different and we wanted something fresh. There is a lot of unpredictability living in the high country, and this home provides and feeling of strength and dependability.
LIV: This kitchen is a dream for cooking and entertaining. Please walk through some of the unique elements in the kitchen.

Doug & Twyla: The pizza oven with a prep station right next to it is such a fun way to involve family and friends in cooking. There are induction and gas burners, a custom hood, Cambria countertops, Pitt burners, double oven, double dishwashers and so many intentional details like the knife storage and built-in spice rack.

The butler’s pantry has a coffee bar, and the outdoor kitchen is ready for entertaining with a grill, griddle, burners, custom hood, warming drawers, and beverage chillers so everything is ready for hosting gatherings large or small.
LIV: This location is ideal with ski access and beautiful views, and it even has a ski room for convenience after a day on the mountain. Would you tell me more about what the new owners could expect for skiing home after a day on the slopes?

Doug: Within 5 minutes you ski to the home from the bottom of Trygve’s Trail at the Peak 8 Learning Area, via a well-used ski trail for this neighborhood.
The ski room is pre-wired for boot warmers and there is also a washer and dryer.
Twyla: You can ski directly down to the property and step right out of your bindings at the door of the ski room—it’s incredibly convenient. The ski room itself is thoughtfully designed with a wet zone, radiant floor heating, and custom lockers, so everything you need is right at your fingertips. Once you’ve kicked off your gear, it’s just steps to the spa—perfect for slipping into relaxation mode with an après cocktail in hand.

LIV: What are some of your favorite things about the Breckenridge community that the new owner could enjoy?
Doug: We’ve raised our four children in Breckenridge and it’s the sense of community we love. I really enjoy Breckenridge because it’s a blue jean town and that casual attitude is what appealed to us when we moved here.
There are so many activities for adults and kids – the rec center, trail access, and ice rink.
Twyla: One of my favorite things about Breckenridge is that people don’t seem to grow old here—they stay active, connected, and energized. You’re always just minutes from nature, and that keeps us grounded.
There’s a shared mindset in this community—everyone values connection to the outdoors, and life here is built around an active, athletic lifestyle.
But what really makes Breckenridge special is its charm and deep-rooted history. It’s the kind of place where our kids actually want to stay, which says so much about the town and the sense of belonging it offers.

LIV: With 3,400 square feet of heated, snow melted outdoor entertaining space, this home really fuses indoor and outdoor spaces beautifully. Would you tell me about the planning that went into that design?
Doug: Initially we wanted to make sure it had après ski outdoor spaces that were second to none in Breckenridge. That was always the plan, so the retractable doors were in the initial concept.
Twyla: We have strong partnerships with our builders and architects, and through that collaboration, the design really takes shape and evolves naturally. It’s all about creating a seamless connection between the indoors and out, and that kind of flow doesn’t happen by accident—it’s intentional.
(119 Boulder Circle was actually awarded “Best Outdoor Living” in the 2024 Parade of Homes, which really speaks to how well the vision came together.)
LIV: Any other details you’d like to share?
Twyla: The spa is fully custom, featuring a decorative wall installation by Tableaux out of Texas that adds both texture and artistry to the space. I collaborated with Hubbardton Forge on the lighting throughout the house and each element was carefully considered to create a cohesive, elevated experience.

Doug: When we are building and designing homes together, there is such intention put into every detail. Twyla comes up with an idea and I figure out how to execute it.
We picture families making memories here. It’s a labor of love and very personal as we put it together, so we take great pride in our finished product.
